What is Hospice?
Hospice care is a type of specialized approach to caring for patients with life-threatening illnesses. Unlike other care, hospice care does not provide curative treatments but rather focuses on enhancing the quality of patients to allow them to live out their final days with dignity and comfort by providing relief from pain and symptoms.
Hospice care is more than just caring for the physical needs of a patient but also the emotional and spiritual needs. This level of care also extends to the families of the patient before and even after the passing of their loved one in hospice care.
Levels of Care
To ensure all our patients’ physical, spiritual, and emotional needs are met, we adjust the level of care as needed. There are four levels of hospice care.
Routine Home Care
This is the most common level of care and is provided wherever the patient calls home. These routine visits ensure that patients still receive comfort and dignity while undergoing routine care.
Routine care includes pain and symptom management, assistance with daily tasks, nutritional tasks, and counseling.
Continuous Home Care
This level of care is often referred to as crisis care when patients need more intensive management due to a medical crisis. This round-the-clock care allows caretakers a break and family members to focus on their loved ones.
General Inpatient Care
This level of hospice care is needed when patients can no longer manage their symptoms at home. During this time, the care team will work hard to control severe pain and stabilize symptoms.
Respite Care
Respite care provides hospice support for caregivers to prevent burnout. This is a temporary type of care.

Is it Time for Hospice?
Hospice is typically recommended with a life expectancy of six months or less. You don’t have to wait for a diagnosis either. If patients are struggling with daily living tasks, treatments are no longer working, or patients do not want invasive and aggressive curative treatment.
Hospice Eligibility
For a patient to be eligible for hospice, the following is considered:
- Prognosis of six months or less
- The patient has elected palliative care
- Has a Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) rating of ≤ 50%-60%
Paying for Hospice
Government-backed programs like Medicare and Medicaid, private insurance, and charitable donations can pay for hospice.
Hospice Medicare Benefit
Patients who have Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) will qualify for the hospice care benefit if they meet the following:
- A doctor’s certificate certifying a prognosis of six months or less
- You accept comfort care over curative treatments
- You sign a statement that shows you choose hospice care over Medicare-covered treatments
