What is the Role of The Hospice Medical Director
The hospice medical director will have multiple roles, from handling patient care to managing the care team and ensuring compliance with regulations. Any medical director at a hospice will tell you that no two days are the same! Here are some of the roles of medical directors in hospice:
- Patient care. One of the medical director’s most important duties is overseeing the patient’s care. They’re in charge of the patient’s eligibility process and will review medical eligibility to ensure patients meet the criteria for hospice care. Alongside the care team of nurses, social workers, chaplains, and others, the medical director will create, review, and update patient care plans based on the patient’s medical, emotional, spiritual, and family needs. They will approve medication orders and make changes based on their review or insight from nurses and family members. The hospice medical director is responsible for ensuring that the hospice team respects the goals of the patients and their families.
- Clinical leadership. Working seamlessly with the nursing staff is critical to the smooth sailing of hospice care, and medical providers are the glue of the care team. They will ensure that all members of the care team collaborate while acting as medical resources for the team. Medical directors also have the unique role of building relationships with other referring doctors to build a network.
- Team management. Medical directors will ensure that the care team works together to ensure all care plans are carried out, questions are answered, and changes and updates are communicated thoroughly between care team members, patients, and their families.
- Compliance and Quality. Hospice providers are responsible for ensuring they comply with all regulations, ethical standards, and laws in the hospice field. Medical directors can assist with this.
