Tailored Veterans’ Care
When caring for veterans, there is a difference in physical and emotional health needs compared to civilians. This is because many veterans will experience some level of physical and emotional pain during their service, leaving them with conditions like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which has to be factored in when creating a personalized care plan tailored to their needs.
It’s not uncommon for veterans needing home health or hospice care to experience strong and complex emotions ranging from grief, anger, and fear, which can manifest into depression, sleep disorders, anxiety, and aggression. Care teams composed of doctors, nurses, bereavement specialists, and chaplains are equipped to manage these disorders while ensuring patients receive the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual care they need.
The Challenges Veterans Experience
While all patients have their own unique medical and emotional needs, veterans come with additional challenges that most civilians are unlikely to experience. At iServe Hospice, our team of experienced and compassionate carers has the tools and strategies to handle these challenges.
- Chronic pain. Due to the physical demands of military service, many veterans suffer from chronic pain and even traumatic brain injuries, which will require the use of pain-relieving medication and relaxation therapies.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD comes with symptoms like insomnia that can make a medical condition worse. Hospice carers are trained to provide relief from this type of distress. The care team can also support family members in coping with and supporting their loved ones during this period.
- Survivor’s guilt. Many veterans will suffer from this type of unresolved grief that can rear its head during a terminal illness. During this time, veterans may experience sadness, guilt, emptiness, and shock, which will require help from bereavement specialists and spiritual counselors to manage.
